Gnu/Linux v. Mac

I was searching for something else when I ended up in this Ubuntu forum (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1117471) where I found this comparison. It's to the point, correct and lets you to choose what you think you need rather than actually choosing it for you. I thought I should preserve it somewhere very accessible to me so I can show to friends(esp. Anup) when they ask.

When it comes to security, Ubuntu and Mac are pretty much dead even. Both Linux and OS X are Unix-based operating systems, and have nearly identical security models. Users of both system can feel safe from viruses and other malware.

In terms of price, Ubuntu wins hands down. Apple software tends to be rather expensive, while Linux and the overwhelming majority of software it uses is absolutely free of charge.

In terms of usability, it's a toss-up. One area in which Apple is quite successful is the user interface. That's why so many mp3 players tend to copy the iPod to some extent. OS X is no exception, and has a very nice interface. On the other hand, arguments could be made for the usability of Gnome, KDE, and Xfce as well, especially considering the amazing degree to which these desktop environments can be customized.

Which brings us to customization. Ubuntu has the edge here. The options for customization of Linux are staggering, with multiple desktop environments and window managers from which to choose, which themselves are highly customizable. OS X can be themed and customized, but not even close to the degree of Linux.

When it comes to software, it's a mixed bag. Mac is more commercially supported than Linux. For most tasks, this doesn't matter as an abundance of FOSS alternatives exist for most commercial applications. And for most purposes, this gives Ubuntu the edge, since the software is just as free as the operating system. If specific applications are a priority, however -- most notably iTunes -- then Mac has the advantage. There's no clear winner here, as it really depends on what software you feel you need.

Of course the mention of iTunes brings us to the issue of freedom. Apple is even more notorious than Microsoft when it comes to vendor lock. Everything Apple produces is proprietary and made to work best (or only) with other Apple products. iPods, for example, are practically useless without iTunes, because the iPod uses a proprietary transfer protocol. Since Apple won't release the details of this protocol, no other software developers can develop iPod management software without essentially reverse-engineering the protocol -- which Apple periodically alters. On one hand, this gives OS X an edge against Linux for people who use other Apple products. On the other, it's extremely annoying and limiting. If you don't like companies manipulating you and dictating how you use their product, then Linux clearly has the edge. While I'm tempted to say this is another tie, I can't in good conscience say that vendor lock is in any way an advantage, except to the vendor. Free and open-source wins.

Because Linux is open-source, anyone can do anything to it, and can see exactly what's going on under the hood. This is part of the reason Linux is a safe computing environment (and arguably slightly more secure than OS X) -- viruses are hard to sneak onto a system when people can see the source code. No restrictions or license agreements restrict your use of your own system. However, because it's not a commercial product backed by a corporate entity, the means of technical support is radically different. For some people, the lack of obligatory customer support is a failing of Linux. Others like not having to rely on a single entity to provide technical support, and prefer the support provided by the Linux community. As a matter of personal preference, tech support is another toss-up.

So... which operating system is better? Well, "better" is a relative term, in more ways than one. In my own case, I'm perfectly happy without iTunes or any other Apple products, so there's no compelling reason for me to use OS X in order to use those other products. I also prefer a free product over an expensive one of equivalent quality, and prefer freedom over the lack thereof. So for me, personally, I say without any hesitation or reservation that Ubuntu is the better operating system. But this may not be true for someone else who loves using iTunes to shop the iTunes store for videos to transfer to his iPhone. For that person, who apparently has a much greater disposable income than myself, Mac OS X is the better choice.

It just depends on your priorities.

A Gadget to Promote SFD

Here is a Google Gadget to promote Software Freedom Day (SFD): http://hosting.gmodules.com/ig/gadgets/file/108664960353323049895/sfd-ilugc.xml

You can add this gadget in Blogger blogs, iGoogle page, Google sites, Google documents etc. Pretty much on all sites that supports Google Gadget API.

I have not hard-coded location and link, so that you can change them if you want to promote some other SFD event(like in JFC, for example). Defaults are Birla Planetarium, Chennai and http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2010/Asia/India/Chennai/ilugc respectively.

You can change title too. Since every visible portion is made editable, Tamil Blogs can also utilize this. Just change values in textbox to Tamil when blogger asks you to change defaults if necessary.

To Add Gadget:
Go to the page where you can edit page design (in Blogger this is Dashboard-->Design), click on Add Gadget --> Add gadget by URL and give the above URL. Some services like blogger will ask you to change default values and in others you have to change them after adding by selecting Edit Gadget.

My Lab

Well, actually not my lab. The lab for which I am the Sysadmin. The lab has 14 systems that dual boot to Windows XP and GNU/Linux, and a central server that runs on only GNU/Linux. Most of my plans for the lab are implemented by now.

These are the improvements in the lab compared to last year, i.e. after I took over.
  • The server system itself. It facilitates
    1. Faster software installation on all systems. [Via apt-cacher]
    2. Web Caching.
    3. One stop monitoring of error and other logs on all systems.
    4. Automated maintenance of all other systems. [using custom shell scripts, Cron and OpenSSH.]
  • Improved security in WinXP.
    1. Uses Software Restriction Policies to protect against viruses coming through removable disks. [99.9% effective. Not a single virus in past two months of operation.]
    2. Anti-virus which is updated daily and fully functional.

And lots more(on next post. :p).. I'm happy except for few kinks, which i hope to iron out soon.

Lab Complete

The UG lab is officially open from today. My long time dream of becoming a system administrator is fulfilled. :-)

All the systems have a dual boot GNU/Linux and Windows XP. I thought of dispensing with windows altogether, but other people are not yet comfortable with using Linux in entirety.

The Float LaTeX Package for Placing the Figure Here

If you don’t care where the figures are placed as long as they are in the same chapter, you need not worry and will get the best layout possible from TeX. But, if there is a major figure or a table which you want to appear before the discussion or a section, you are in for trouble. There is an option [h] which means ‘You may put it here if you like.’ No, Tex is not going to like whatever you like and often floats it somewhere else.

Hence a package called here was written by David Carlisle which gave an option [H] which means “put it HERE, period”. That package is now replaced by Anselm Lingnau’s float package which provides some more facilities also. This package is included by default in both MikTeX as well as TeXlive and you may include it in file by standard

\usepackage{float}
and use the HERE option as
\begin{figure}[H]
(or)
\begin{table}[H]
Note that the [H] option cannot be used in conjunction with other options as you can do with [h] option like [htb]. That doesn’t make sense, anyway.

TeX and LaTeX

TeX is a typesetting tool that is used predominantly by mathematicians and other scientists to prepare reports, articles and books. It is more efficient than any other word processor. (In fact, MS-WORD cannot do many things that TeX can do.) After all, it is written by prof. Knuth himself.
LaTeX is a macro package for the TeX system. That is, it defines a number of additional keywords and commands that make using TeX easy and accessible for non-programmers. For example, to get fonts and other style required by a particular journal, all you have to do is select an appropriate class and the content will be formatted in a correct manner for you.(Assuming that somebody has written a style file and/or class, which is true for most journals.) If you are writing an article for a journal and it is to be included in a collected works also, imagine the work involved if you are using a word processor. In LaTeX all you have to do is change the class name. :-)

To learn TeX and LaTeX get hold of the following books and read them.
Here we'll see the packages required to use it and how to install them, since that is what most beginners struggle at and not covered in the above books.

Windows:
Download and install the following software (Both are available for free):
MikTeX - This contains the actual TeX software and it takes care of reading your input files and converting them into PDF or DVI files.
WinShell - This is basically an editor and you can create documents without this one, but considering the extraordinary capabilities of the Notepad it may be wise to install this. It has much more capabilities like generating LaTeX code for writing math symbols or tedious work like producing table etc.

Linux:
Open your favorite package manager and install the following packages:
  • texlive-base
  • texlive-latex-base
Install the documentation too. As you progress with the stuff you can install extra packages and their documentation.
If you are an EMACS fan, install Auctex also.
To compile your TeX files (which are actually text files created using any editor) see the relevant section in The TeXbook.

I'll post about the tips and tricks in subsequent posts since tutorial is already available in Knuth's excellent book.
A TeX Users Group is also available and is very active.

Data Recovery From A Formatted Drive

Last Sunday I formatted one of my partitions mistakenly.(Note to self: You moron. When you login as root, be EXTREMELY CAREFUL.) This is one of the occupational hazards of wanting to be in the bleeding edge of GNU/Linux. I reinstall Linux once in a while since it'll become painfully unusable due to my ripping apart all settings and damaging it to the core. This time it affected a windows partition also due to a silly mistake done by me. Affecting a windows installation is not new. But not this severe.
Fortunately, most, if not all, of the data was recovered using EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard. While searching to find a suitable software I realized that there were no decent reviews about these software. So this post.

Fortunately one of my friends had this software and helped me out. But the file names of some of the files are changed to hashes(#) etc. and the files are sometimes in more than one location(size of the recovered data is nearly 50% more than what I actually had.) Anyways, I'm happy to get them back. I was in very bad mood since it contained my entire collection of pictures, arranged. The last word is the catch. You could get almost all of them, but arranging them is a hell lot of work.

Best thing to do when you want to recover data from a drive? Don't do anything to that drive! Install the recovery software in some other dive. Don't touch that particular drive. The more you write, more the chance that your data is overwritten.

For the one who's wondering: The data is not gone when you delete it. Not even when you format it. They can be recovered back. If you want to really delete sensitive info without a trace, try shredding.

Sudoku solver in C [Linux]

When I was in first year of my study (now in 3rd) at my college, Yuvarajaa and I wrote a C program to solve sudoku. The program solves it much the same way as we humans do. There is no brute force used.

To download the source code go here. The instructions for compiling are also given in the same page. I explain the algorithm used below.

Sudoku is a type of Latin square and an exact cover problem and efficient algorithms to solve it can be written using methods like backtracking or dangling links. But our algorithm is very simple(meaning beginners can understand. We ourselves were beginners then:-)) which solves it pretty much the same way as we humans do. Consequently our algorithm is slower than above mentioned ones.(It is still much faster, given the capabilities of today's PCs & you wont notice a difference.)

The program does following things in the given order:
  1. Enumerates possible values of all empty cells. The cells which have only one possible value are filled up.
  2. Next the enumerated values are scanned to identify the locked pairs, naked pairs(triples also), Hidden pairs etc. and appropriately deleted. The steps 1 & 2 are repeated to fill-up the grid.
  3. There exists some very hard sudokus which cannot be solved by the above methods. When no more cell could be filled up by the above steps the program jumps to a hard function which assumes one of the enumerated values and proceeds by above way. If contradictory solution is obtained then the assumed value is changed and proceeded again. This does not amount to much time since usually there are only two possible values in the cell to be assumed. Anyway, for safety, we terminate the program with an "Unable to solve" message when the solution is not obtained even after assumption of a third value.
As far as we have tested, this program solved all the sudokus, including an empty grid. I finished it by the middle of first year itself. But i didn't have a web page or blog to host it then. And now i forgot many intricate details of the algorithm. :( I re-read it once more to write this post. ;-)

This is essentially what humans do while solving. This type of algorithm has some advantages too. according to wikipedia:
human-style solvers can be employed by hand-crafting puzzlesmiths for their ability to rate the difficulty of a created puzzle and show the actual solving process their target audience can be expected to follow.
To enable this we have a function called ibug which, when enabled(at compile time) displays step by step procedure and the enumerated values at each step. It was originally written to track bugs in the code. Hence the name ;)

OOXML On Hold

Due to protests from South Africa, Brazil, India and Venezuela, ISO put on hold the OOXML standardization process two days ago.

The OOXML format is not fit for anything, let alone an international standard. It is full of bugs(sample), non compatible with itself(!?, forget ISO/IEC compliance) and more. It is carefully designed to enable only MS to build applications that can handle the said format. It is a move to monopolize the market and is against public interests.

Microsoft heavily influenced the standardization process with all the means one could imagine. It even lodged complaints against BIS committee members that they are acting against national interests.(Apparently, to Bill Gates, national interests means Microsoft's interests.)

Here is an open letter protesting that, by Prof Deepak B Phatak, IIT Bombay, India. He is one of the BIS committee members. A Tamil translation of the same(in part) can be found here.

Learning FEA. Is there an open source FEA software?

Currently I'm learning FEM(Finite Element Methods) for structural problems from my HOD. We use computers for solving those problems fast and in our lab the software used is ANSYS. I'm an ardent supporter of free software and am searching for an equivalent Final Element Analysis software in Linux. Or at least GPLed Windows software. I saw some of those using Google search. But I'm not satisfied with their capabilities.

Anybody know such good software? If so please comment.

PS: Twisted DNA suggested doing a post on 'navel bra' as my first post. But my research(;)) on that is still under progress(!). Hence I write a different first post.
